Officials in North Carolina say heavy rain and flooding from the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal forced dozens of people to flee their homes.

Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, early Sunday — the first storm of hurricane season to make landfall in the United States. As winds gusted to near 50 mph, and 2 inches of rain fell in hours on the north side of town,

Tropical Storm Chantal has now been downgraded to a tropical depression after making landfall early Sunday. The storm made landfall near Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center. Its maximum sustained winds have since decreased to 35 mph. Chantal is currently moving to the north at 9 mph.
