“Improving prescription drug affordability for Medicare enrollees is the core of the Inflation Reduction Act, and the next cycle of negotiations will continue to strengthen Medicare for generations to come," Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, said in the news release.

The new Trump administration should seize the opportunity to change the Medicare drug price negotiation program by introducing floors.

Trump has reversed some of President Biden’s initiatives, including $2 monthly out-of-pocket cap on some generics and experimental pricing models for gene therapies. But so far the healthcare elements of the Inflation Reduction Act remain unchanged.

Experts suggest that most Americans will not experience immediate changes in their out-of-pocket health care expenses.

The rescinded order directed Medicare and Medicaid to test ways to lower drug costs for enrollees. Those tests hadn’t started, so current drug prices are unaffected.

The Biden administration announced Friday that Ozempic, Wegovy and 13 additional drugs will now be covered under Medicare Part-D for price negotiations, the next round of negotiations under the Inflation Reduction Act passed by President Joe Biden in 2022.

One of those now-cancelled policies directed Medicare to investigate ways to slash drug costs, including the possibility of a $2 monthly out-of-pocket cap on some generic medications. Monday's actions also follow through on a key goal of Trump's first term -- weakening the Affordable Care Act.
