A UCLA study found that the Eaton fire disproportionally impacted Black households in Altadena. Here’s what they found.

Black residents of Altadena were more likely to have their homes damaged or destroyed by the Eaton fire and will have a harder financial road to recovery from the disaster, according to research released Tuesday by UCLA.

Altadena’s artist community is determined to rise from the ashes after losing studios and galleries to the Eaton Fire, in addition to homes.

A study published Tuesday by UCLA researchers indicates the Eaton Fire disproportionately affected Black residents in Altadena. The research comes from a new data brief from the UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies,

Before the wildfire, Altadena had a Black population of 18% and a Black home ownership rate of more than 80%, about double the national average. The suburb grew in diversity following the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which banned racial discrimination in mortgage lending known as “redlining.”

Black residents of Altadena were disproportionately impacted by the Eaton Fire’s devastation, both in the concentration of households within the burn area and the percentage of homes that were destroyed or sustained major damage,
